Which Country Doesn’t Have Its Own Anthem

Flag of Scotland

Does every country have its own main song? It would seem quite logical that every country should have an anthem. At every official meeting, during important events and holidays, competitions in every country sounds its anthem… In fact, there are exceptions. Which countries do not have an anthem?

Wondering about the presence or absence of the main song in the state, it is worth paying attention to some nuances. So, in order to become an anthem, the song must be legalized. And if we think about the main state songs, then there are countries in which their anthems officially just do not exist. Is that really even possible? Yes, it is. In general, strange things often happen with musical state symbols. For example, in Spain, there are no words in the anthem. And the island of St. Helena took in the anthems song, which is more like a radio schlager.

So in which countries do not have an anthem? In fact, there are few such states. More precisely, only two, and each has its own reasons and its own history of the absence of a state song.

So, the first state that can well claim to be a country that does not have its official main song is Cyprus. Can we say that Cyprus is a country without an anthem? Yes, you could. But the paradoxical thing is that at important national events the anthem is still played. Except… It’s not the anthem of Cyprus, it’s the anthem of Greece. It so happens that the majority of the island’s population is Greek, and therefore the main song of Greece is close to them. Of course, in this case not without scandals. Thus, the Turkish part of the population (and they are fewer than Greeks) spoke out against the fact that the Republic and Greece had one anthem. Actually, the Turkish community in general prefers to use the Turkish anthem. The UN generally tried to solve this issue peacefully, proposing to play only music, without words. But the majority of the islanders (and as we remember, they are Greeks) were against it.

However, apart from Cyprus, another country has distinguished itself in this respect. But it is more complicated, because there is nothing similar to the anthem here at all. This is Scotland. It would seem that a state with such a rich history, so long fought for freedom, simply must have its own official song, which would accompany all important events. But just Scotland is known as a country without an anthem.

Why is that so? The fact is that the anthem of Great Britain, for obvious reasons, is not considered an option in Scotland (for many years Scotland fought for independence). As for the national anthem, it was never created. To be more precise, not one and not two, but six (!) songs claim to this proud title. All of them are loved and recognized by the people, and therefore all of them are performed alternately at official events. To be more precise, there are some problems here too.

For example, the song “Brave Scotland” is loved by everyone, but its lyrics are almost unknown to almost no one, although the text originated in the early twentieth century. Nevertheless, the song is played before various big events, growing to the size of a big show (sometimes without lyrics).

Another song received the most votes in the anthem selection vote. “Flower of Scotland” was written in the 60s of the twentieth century and tells about the historical victories of the Scottish people.

Among the other contenders for the title of anthem – a melody to be played on the bagpipes and patriotic songs.

But, since the inhabitants of the country have not agreed on what to choose, until now, when asked “which country has no anthem?” it is safe to say that it is Scotland.
